Rafa in NY Times, "Ripped or Torn Up".

NY Time published an article about Rafa by Cynthia Gorney, "Ripped or Torn Up", and what an article it is, although I feel the need to warn you that it is a 7 page monster. But it's Rafa. So it's worth it.

This one is probably my favorite part of the whole thing:
He thrills people. Federer thrills people, too, but the Nadal thrill is so different from the Federer thrill that studying the two of them is like a gorgeous immersion course in the varieties of athletic possibility. Federer is elegant and fluid and cerebral, so that his best tennis looks effortless even when he is making shots that ought to be physically impossible. Nadal is muscled-up and explosive and relentless, so that his best tennis looks not like a gift from heaven but instead like the product of ferocious will. His victories and his taped-up knees and his years as a very good No. 2 in the world all resonate together, as though the rewards and the wages of individual effort had been animated in a single human being: if you hurl yourself at a particular goal furiously enough and long enough you may tear your body up in the process, but maybe you can get there after all. People have loved watching Nadal create trouble inside Federer’s head. This is how they characterize it in tennis, that Nadal makes Federer crazy, that Nadal’s refusal over and over to be beaten by Federer in Paris was the one problem that Federer — who usually has uncanny on-court telepathy about what his opponent plans for three shots hence and exactly how to wreck it — was unable to figure out.

Then Nadal finally beat Federer at Wimbledon too, and then at the Australian, where Federer famously picked up his runner-up trophy and looked at the assembled reporters and burst into tears, causing Nadal to put an arm around him, the young Spaniard at once respectful and consoling, and murmur something private into his ear. That Nadal now has the capacity to outplay Federer on multiple surfaces — that the signature game of the world’s highest-ranked tennis player is not a beautiful ballet unto victory but an imperfect, bruising, savage refusal to yield — this is why Nadal thrills people. This and the biceps. “Every tennis lover would like, someday, to play like Federer,” Philippe Bouin told me. “But every man wants to be Rafael Nadal. Which is different.”

The article is also full of Rafaism quotes.
“They were saying this three years ago, that I couldn’t last,” Nadal said. “And after four years, I’m better than I ever was. This irritates me, no? I’m tired of people telling me I can’t go on playing like this. In the end this is what makes me win, lose, everything. I can’t control how I play. I want to keep getting better. And the most important part is the head.”

“I promise you, I don’t get up in the morning thinking about being No. 1. I get up in the morning thinking that I’ve got a match, and I need to try to play as well as I possibly can.”

It's intimate, it's revealing, it's Rafa. That should be enough to get you to read it.

"Be Calm, I Am Going To Win."

Here's Rafa on the cover of Observe Magazine.

Who knew he'd look good in sephia? Well, *we* Rafanatics probably knew. As if he'd look bad in anything. In nothing, I suppose, is the ultimate look for him. But then again it's probably just me. I just can't get over the arms. Oh the arms. Rafa, I worship thine arms. Just look at how small the tennis ball is in his hand. Look!

And a sly, sexy smile. That's it, I'm done.

Oh yes, there's an article to go with it. Complete with interviews and a look at Rafa and his team.

Technique aside, Nadal's true edge is his grounded mentality. He has a rare gift for living in the moment, and the rarer gift of being able to produce precisely what that moment requires.

Lovely. A must read.

A Gaggle Of Wimbledon Talks

Here are a few articles about whose chances are what in Wimbledon, and what others are saying about The Holy Knees.

The Ginge Hotness (a.k.a Andy Murray) thinks Rafa will play at Wimby while he himself is shouldering quite a bit of pressure.
Nadal is struggling with knee tendonitis which could still force him to miss Wimbledon, but Murray believes the Spaniard will play and be a major contender.

"I'd be surprised if he didn't. I mean, I'm sure his knees are not good but he likes to play a lot," Murray said.

"I think he'll come into Wimbledon with not as much match practice but with the same belief that he can win the tournament."

Murray will shoulder the burden of being the only Briton with a chance of ending the 73-year wait for a home winner at Wimbledon but he is keen to play down expectations.

On the other hand, The Ginge has support in the form of a fellow Brit.

TIM Henman believes it will take "one hell of a performance" for anyone to deny Andy Murray the Wimbledon title this year.

The former British No 1 still rates Roger Federer as favourite for the title and he is confident that injured Spaniard Rafael Nadal will be fit to defend his crown. But Murray, who won his first grass-court match 6-1, 6-4 against Andreas Seppi at Queen's yesterday, boasts a 6-2 career record over Federer and he has beaten Nadal twice in the last year, including the US Open semi-final.

Andy Roddick has been doing everything right lately, from donning pink glitter hats to saying really nice things.
"I'm certainly not going to underestimate Rafa. I think he's going to be there. I think he's going to be fine, and I think he's going to put forth all the effort he has. He's certainly proven that in the past", said Roddick.

The 26-year-old American said he's played with the problem "for years and years and years and years".

"Rafa has had knee tendinitis for a long time and he's won Grand Slams while he's had it", said the Roddick, chasing a fifth career title at Queen's club.

Roddick speaks with experience on the tendinitis which he and Nadal must both deal with. "There is a positive side for Rafa: it's uncomfortable and it's painful, but it's not something that's going to be a career threatening injury if you play on it. It's kind of a fancy term for overuse".

The great Federer agrees with everyone, that Rafa will play and all this knee talk is just pish-posh.
Federer said Monday he didn’t think Nadal’s knee injury will keep him out of Wimbledon, no matter what doom-and-gloom coach Toni Nadal says, and even though Nadal was in Barcelona Monday for two days of tests on his knee.

He pointed out Nadal’s knees weren’t wrapped in Paris — but they haven’t been wrapped all season.

Albeit, amidst all the chirps, this one says it best:

Wimbledon starts in less than two weeks. Forget history; bring on the next Federer-Nadal affaires d'honneur.

Vamos!

Los Príncipes Del Tenis Español: Are We Sure They're Humans?

Surely mere humans wouldn't be so tempting.

Spanish tennis hunks on the Spanish Elle!

Did I ever say anything bad about Nando? My bad. I'd take him in a heartbeat.

*sigh*

When did Tommy get so dreamy looking?

Ferru looks better off than on court, yes? 'Specially with the shirt off.

Unfortunately we don't really have a good picture of shirtless Almagro.
I know, it's a crime.

Does anyone ever wonder why Feli chose tennis instead of modelling?

Om nom nom nom.

Have I ever mentioned how much I love tiny, polcadot boxers?

I don't know who that is lying on the sand, but Ferru's (huge and white) thighs are blinding me in a totally good way.

Is this the guys' version of pillow fight? A pillow case fight?
Inquiring mind wants to know, because my appreciation is all woman.

(Not that a man's appreciation wouldn't be as strong, but that line sounds funnier in my head.)

Tommy fought a bloody battle with the coconut tree to be on camera, and he lost.

So did Nico.

Feli is taking this photoshoot very seriously.

I swear, the first thing that popped into my head with this picture was "Baywatch".

We start with Nando and we close with Nando.
Hubba hubba and all that.

But, okay, so you got all of these men... but no Rafa. Epic fail.

I Think I've Caught The Ginge Fever

Ginge Fever (tm Jills): an awesome state to be in if you're a tennis fan. You're troubled with denial, but then you feel this terrible urge to tell everyone else you've got it. Not so much awesome if you take tennis out of the fever. Because then you'll be admitting to lusting over this pasty, skinny, really dorky dude.

Here's Andy Murray and Some Very Metrosexual Dude (read: David Beckham) at No.10 Downing Street in London. They are marking the launch of the campaign "Malaria No More UK" and focuses on mobilising the public to raise funds for bed nets in Africa. Actually Andy tweeted about it and gave us a link. Go support him and all that.

Here are they with the Prime Minister. Yeah, 'cause he's that important, y'all.

I cannot get over his snaggletooth. It's so awesomely adorable.

*sigh*

That's all.

Teenage Bubble Butt!

I'm so going to hell for that title.

I found an old article of Rafa today at FourFourTwo, a football site. He talked a little about playing football, and choosing between that and tennis.

If things had turned out differently, Nadal could have followed in the footsteps of his uncle Miguel Angel Nadal, the centre-back nicknamed ‘The Beast of Barcelona’, who made more than 200 appearances for the Catalan giants and played 62 times for Spain.

“It was very close, I can tell you,” says Nadal. “I was playing both all the time. My parents worried that my studies would suffer if I played too much sport so they told me I had to choose football or tennis. I was pretty good at football. I was a striker. But I always felt that tennis was more my thing.”

MONTE CARLO: Hola Xisca!

I did say I was gonna look for some Xisca/Maribel pics in Monte Carlo, and bless google and some very good friends, I found some.

That's Maribel. Holy Lord, she's hot. With El Toro cap! Flove.

Why do I always covet her tops? First the white top she wore to Cincy, now this yellow one.

With Mama Nadal.

I'm sorry, I don't care what anyone says, Xisca is a frigging beautiful girl. There. I've officially joined the church of Xisca.

Thanks Stella!

MONTE CARLO: Launch Party (UPDATED: Video)

3 days outta the loop and Monte Carlo started without me. Life's so not fair.

So here it is, guys, the mess that is the Monte Carlo launch party.

Oh my Lord, Rafa. I'm quite speechless here. Is that your father's jacket? Your Uncle Tony's? Tio Miguel? Costa's?

WHOSE IS IT?? YOU'RE KILLING ME. Get thee to a tailor, stat. Do not torture me so, I beg of you.

See Ginge? He's not trying too hard. Fitting jacket, brushed curls, scary snaggleteeth, but nice smile.

Dare I say Nando looks quite.. hittable here? Oh, Nando. If only you keep it in your pants more often.

Nole, I think I have a jacket almost exactly like that. I don't know if it doesn't bode well for me, you, or both of us. Your gf's very cute though.

Beautiful man. Terrible dress sense. That's all. I'd totally hit it though.

UPDATE: Video
