So Is Rafa Skipping Madrid? Or Not? Skip? No?

This here is the culprit - from his presser after the loss in Miami:
Q. 40 some unforced errors and the whole tournament was kind of iffy. Are you going to take a break?

RAFAEL NADAL: Two days, three days, yeah. I have to adapt to clay another time. I have to be 100% ready mentally, physically. The most important thing, playing well, so for Monte-Carlo, Barcelona, Rome, and Madrid maybe.

Times Online did a pretty good rubdown on why he would and what will happen if he misses it.
There is no doubt that the world No 1 will play in the two Masters 1000 events in Monte Carlo — starting on Monday week — and Rome, in between which he will return to Barcelona, where he is a four-times champion and has lost once in 22 matches. It is the newly repositioned Mutua Madrileña Masters in the Spanish capital, staged for the first time on clay at the Caja Mágica — with three arenas, each of which fold into one — that is holding its breath as to Nadal’s participation.

Though he will not say so publicly, the 22-year-old is worried that a tournament staged at 650 metres above sea level does not offer the most suitable preparation for his fourth defence of the French Open, which begins in Paris six days later.

TennisTalk takes a dip in the speculation pool too:

It is not clear whether Nadal would actually miss Madrid, which ends six days before the start at Roland Garros. But there has been no shortage of unsolicited advice to the world No.1 to cut back on his events, especially after a listless defeat in Miami against Juan Del Potro.

As it stands, Nadal is signed on for four tournaments in five weeks before Paris. Of those run-up events, the 22-year-old is defending titles in Monte Carlo and Barcelona.

I say skip Rome, but that's just me. In any case he needs to skip one of those events, and if I did not misunderstand, he cannot miss Madrid.

  1. Isn't it amazing that tacking on the words "personal" and "maybe" at the end of his sentences can spark a gagillion articles about Rafa and his problems/intentions!! He is SO famous, it's CRAZY!!! :)

  2. Agreed. I don't know which one he needs to skip (MC is still a go probably since it starts next week) but he gotta skip at least one. I say skip one of the Spanish events. I know he probably wants to play them and (most likely) feel like he must because those are the tournaments on home soil and it's a chance for Spanish fans to see him, but he needs to think about his health right now more than the fans. I'm sorry if that sounds mean, but he does. He needs to be a bit selfish right now. I would say skip Madrid have have a two week rest (is Madrid a one week or two week tourny?) leading up to RG. But that's me.

  3. He should skip one event for sure, his schedule is ridiculous. I'd say he should skip Rome and just stay in Spain.

This is a cool blog, would you like to exchange links with a rival? :-)

  4. Jo - yes, it's crazy, you go search on youtube and there's a gazillion videos up per day, just about him. It's mindboggling.

SA- He will never skip Barca. And because of his sense of obligations plus the points he will lose or some penalties he will gain from missing Madrid, I say miss Rome. But then again Madrid is only a week away from RG.. I don't know. This is all the tourney's fault! Why move it to clay, as if there's months and months of clay season.

  5. Hey Ruan - I'd love to exchange links. And let's not think of us as rivals but fellow bloggers, shall we? ;)

    Putting the link up now.

I agree with skipping Rome too.

  6. Madrid and Rome are the required ones - the optionals are Barcelona and Monte-Carlo and I think his emotional ties to them are strong...thus the dilemma.

They are all one week. I think IW and Miami are the only 2 week Masters. (But I could be on crack.)

  7. You're right - IW and Miami are the only 2 week masters, and if he skips either Rome or Madrid he gets a zero on his ranking, and cannot play his best 1000-level tournament next year (ie. he forfeits IW defense next year).

Thus, he really really really cant afford to skip Rome or Madrid, and he wont skip MC or Barca. His only way out is injury...

  8. Cool ill put yours up now as well. I was just kidding i think of Rafa and Roger as a team agaisnt the young talent. Not that Rafa isnt young but him and Roger has controlled tennis with an iron fist for so long now. I hope they can keep fighting it out for the slams for a long time to come still. What a great rivalry! :D

  9. Thanks, Pheasant Plucker - that's what I thought on both accounts.

He doesn't want to play Madrid because of the conditions, but he's compelled to by nationalism and the ATP rules.
