Lanvin Rafa: After The Initial Rush

So I've been waiting for the hype to die down a little, because right about a day after the Lanvin picture was leaked, I looked at it again and I felt.. underwhelmed.

*ducks from rotten vegetables launched by Rafanatics*

I think they had the right idea with the undone tie, not very made up Rafa, but I wished there was.. more. What about some color? His skin is sublime in pictures, and he's got such nice brown eyes. To me the picture is so spark-less. I don't even like the bottle. If I'd have seen the real ad in say, a shopping mall or the likes, I wouldn't have ran to look at it closer (aside from the fact that it is Rafa) like I did this picture .

James Penfold for Giorgio Armani.

I think Lanvin should take a cue from Ralph Lauren. See what they did with Ignacio Figueras.

I know, who

Nacho baby is an Argentine polo player and the face of Polo Black. He has been in contract with Polo for 7 years and his profile has sky rocketed. Of course, it is not a coincidence that he is the face of Polo Black, since Ralph Lauren do sponsor the Black Watch polo team uniforms where Nacho plays, but my point is, there is a way to make Lanvin Rafa a successful campaign, and that picture is not a good start.

Why do I know who he is when I've never watched a polo match in my life? Because he haunted me in my dreams with this picture.

Yes, I bought the perfume. For myself. And I wear it to bed and dream of Nacho. What?? A single girl has her vices okay.

Check out the video. Nacho speaks with an accent, has wavy black hair and bronze skin, tall, and he exudes some crazyly sexy animal magnetism. Hm.. I wonder which other sportsman I know of has the same qualities...

I am not saying Rafa should go all model and be on a catwalk, but please, all I ask is a better picture. There's a reason I love perfume ads, and (current) Lanvin Rafa is not giving me a single twitch.

With a subject as ripe as Rafa Nadal,  how difficult could it be? For god's sakes, we go gaga over him when he's sweaty and covered in dirt and behaving like a bloodthirsty gladiator on court. He's got mad sex appeal.

That said, I found this picture.

It's still not as good as it could be, but for me it's better than the one we've seen. I like the colors, the pose is not as awkward, but the bottle needs to be somewhere else, Rafa needs to be bigger, and he needs to relax a bit more - Pissed Off Rafa will not sell bottles. But it's going in the right direction. They should just let him hold a racquet and RELAX. Invite a few friends. Feli, Nico, Ferrer. Let them hang out around the set, crack a few jokes, snap snap. There you go. I refuse to believe there was not a better picture than the one we've seen, from the hundreds they took that day.

I say fix it Lanvin, and you'll garner way more money. Win win, right?

Again, I know Rafa is first and foremost a tennis player, and he probably has zero intention to be a world wide celeb. But he and Lanvin chose to do this thing. So while you guys are there already, let's make it great ad! Instead of something that will fade from people's mind 2 months from now. Or worse, unnoticable.

But of course, that's just me.

What say you, Rafanatics?

*I know I'll get a lot of lashing for this post, but I'm Babz, and I say what I think or feel. If I don't, then this blog wouldn't exist. And on that note, Vamos Rafa!

  1. I didn't like the pic in the first place. I like your second choice better, though. The last pic. The guys in the middle? Meh. Good looking, but no Rafa. The best pic I've seen so far, and I have seen very few pix, I admit, is the one upstairs. Towel, legs, hair, hint of realRafasmile.

"Invite a few friends. Feli, Nico, Ferrer. "
No. Invite natch, babz, sonja, johanne, and all the Rafanatics. Have them undress and stand just outside of his reach. That will get THOSE eyes we like. I will even put on my F--k me red lipstick.

  2. Hm...I don't know.
It's weird, a few days before I saw the first pic from this campaign I was thinking (as you do, eh...hum...) about what the pics from the Lanvin ad might look like. I was thinking maybe bronzed Rafa on a boat in the mediterranean or naked Rafa floating in water or...just naked Rafa.
I had definitely hoped for a more 'natural' Rafa and more close-up, less airbrushed.
That said, I love the black and white pic. Me thinks it's stylish, ooozes good taste.
Not so keen on the colour pic. Don't like hands in pockets (especially not Rafa's beautiful) and the bottle looks absurd.
I like the POLO ad, the guy's a looker, but seems far more comfortable in front of the camera than our Rafa.
And therein lies the problem (which isn't really a problem, beacause Rafa is not a model), me thinks. I don't think Rafa is comfortable enough with these staged photo shoots and the result will always be a bit awkward... I may be wrong, though.

  3. "I don’t think Rafa is comfortable enough with these staged photo shoots and the result will always be a bit awkward…"

Thing is we have seen magazine covers with Rafa on it and some of it is very nice. And that is also staged photoshoots.

I don't know, I'm just wishing for something more.

  4. I'll get my Louboutin. And my leopard print undies set. He won't survive with the likes of us.

  5. True, the NY Magazine shoot was good, for example.
However, if you look at the video of when they shot the "V for victory" NIKE ad, Rafa looked quite uncomfortable there, when they tried to make him look all macho, covered in pulver.
It IS disappointing from a cool fashion brand like Lanvin, though, if this is all we get...

  6. I agree, CC. I actually don't like the 2nd Lanvin pic (color ad). Rafa looks awkward/constipated/confused/bored, the bottle is absurd like you said, and the color ruins the romanticism I think they were going for in the first ad, with both the black & white outfit and film. If they go color, they need to get up close and personal and show off Rafa's beautiful complexion. I think your idea about bronzed Rafa on a boat and/or in the water would be a step in the right direction. Hmmm, I'm confused now. They've got a great subject to work with, but I think they really need to just go for it. Rafa's sexy, and you're obviously trying to convey that, so just DO IT! Show him off, make us purr with delight....

    Good post, Babz :)

  7. I'm with ya, johanne.
Oh, I can't THINK of a better way to spend a wet and windy Tuesday evening! (-:

  8. The NY mag shoot was alright, but still not there. I'm talking about other mag cover, much like the one in the post before this. Every time he wins a slam there'll be a photocall, and if he can look relaxed and natural with god knows how many dozens of photographers on scene, I bet he can relax here too.

I do sound like I'm asking a lot, but then I think again, and it's really not.

"It IS disappointing from a cool fashion brand like Lanvin, though, if this is all we get…"

Then you get my point. They could have something truly extraordinary, and they're not doing it.

  9. As I said, the second picture is not good enough either. I just think the idea, the feel, is better than the first one.

But yes, WHY can't they do it on a boat, in Mallorca, with Rafa in shorts?? Or something!! God, I really, really hope they're gonna put out a better pic or I'm gonna be sooooo mad.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Yes, when I first heard that Rafa had teamed up with Lanvin I was over the moon! Such a classy, classic and cool brand (did a great collaboration with Swedish jeans brand Acne a while ago), so yeah, I suppose we really should expect more...

    ReplyDelete
  11. Not super excited about either Rafa picture in this case. I think a close up on his beautiful face and skin would be much much better.

The polo player looks like Hugh Grant to me.

    ReplyDelete
  12. *horrified*

NO! Not Hugh Grant. Pleeeeeeease. Hate him. Hate. Him.

But yes. A close up would be awesome. That's my whole point, they don't need to do so much. He's a great subject with natural beauty.

I cannot believe I just typed that, but he really is quite beautiful.

  13. Remember those shorty-short swim trunks Rafa was photographed in last year, on a boat, when he was on vacay somewhere?? RiCH posted about it. Rafa should show off some serious leg as well as some sizzlin' sun-kissed, glistening skin....hell yeah.

Oh btw, I forgot to ask this before? Hasn't Rafa met Nacho. I SWEAR I heard that Nalby had asked Rafa to do this charity thingy in Argentina one time, and they like hung out with Nacho (or maybe it was another famous polo player?) and Rafa got up on the horse and attempted to play polo. I'm not crazy, this totally happened. Someone help me out! :D

  14. LOL Sorry Babz about the H.G. connection.

My screensaver is a beautiful shot of just rafa's face, i don't remeber where i umm stole it from, but it would look fantastic with the bottle in the corner. Its kind of a 3/4 profile shot and his hair is all loose and yummy.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I remember, the green shorts? One of these days I have to do some serious ogle post.

I dunno anything about rafa meeting Nacho! LORD. Don't show me pictures. DON'T! I won't survive!

We should ask Miri. She's like a walking Rafa encyclopaedia. I humbly bow before her presence.

  16. Oooh. Show me a screenshot! Now you've got me wondering.

I used to be alright with HG, but a man that could cheat on Liz Hurley is not quite right, I'm thinking. North and South.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Agreed, about Hugh and Liz. I actually found the pic and just emailed it to you :). I wasn't sure i had saved it at first, but luckily i did :)

  18. OMG Neil! I totes did a post of that picture for a Frisky Friday.

    http://tennislust.com/2009/03/07/frisky-friday-some-kind-of-pretty/

I love that pic. Sure he's airbrushed and all, but my point is that it was definitely staged, and the look in his eyes is still to die for.

    *dies again*

    ReplyDelete
  19. ROFL...i know...i died when i saw it too!!!! Lanvin take notice...THIS is the pic that'll sell a million bottles of the cologne!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Agreed. Or some variation thereof.

That said, I'm totally digging CC's idea of Rafa on a white boat, white shorts, shirtless, just lounging, and looking into the camera with come hither eyes for Xisca.. SNAP!

There you go. I'd buy TWO bottles. Just for starters.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'm thinking Rafa, on boat in white speedos...(to hell with shorts!) If anyone can pull that off,it's GOTTA be Rafa.
Imagine his bronzed skin, in white, against blue mallorcan sea.
Or bronzed Rafa, in white speedos, on sandy mallorcan beach...

    *shakes fist at Lanvin*

    ReplyDelete
  22. lol or lying on his stomach, smiling widely up at the camera, clenching the bottle between his lovely cheeks!!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yuc...my least favourite picture of Rafa ever! Sorry. Don't even think it looks like him.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Oh boy.

    *thud*

Hey, those cheeks could totally hold it you know, well muscled and all... I'm incorrigible. >_<

    ReplyDelete
  25. I agree. When I first saw the picture, I almost crashed through the floor because it was a novelty, fashion-y Rafa, and he looks beautiful anyway. But when I started thinking about the potential, it could be so much better. I think he looks more amazing and vibrant at his pressers, wet hair straight out of the shower and t-shirt and fumbling with his water bottle and all.

My fav photoshoot of Rafa was the one where they got him to jump around and make crazy faces. It was like, now THIS is Rafa, being happy and himself. <3

    ReplyDelete
  26. Babz: check out Miri's site to see us chatting about Rafa's polo adventure. The info she found indicates Nacho was indeed there. Oy!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Oh drats. I spoke too soon. Wrong Nacho. It was Ignacio Astrada. Bummer.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hmmmm..... actually I really love the Lanvin ad picture.
Those other guys totally don't do it for me.

But I agree that they could've done even more. The boat idea is great.
I'm thinking: a close-up of shirtless Rafa lying on his stomach, leaning onto his elbows, his bronzed skin slightly glistening in the Mallorcan sun, some drops of salt water sprinkled onto his delicate shoulder blades, the hair wild and a little wet, some strands of hair falling into his face and then: the eyes. Raw sex.
All of that taken on a yacht, the turquoise sea in the background, vibrant colours.

OK Lanvin people, when do I start? ;P

    ReplyDelete
  29. Hey Babz! I think we're getting down to the elemental question: which country has hotter men, Argentina or Spain? Talk about tough calls.

I think the Lanvin ads are underwhelming, too - seems like a waste of Rafa's best assets. . . Maybe it's the overly messy hair. But then again, I'm a Roger fan which means I have a thing for perfect hair :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. I'm happy with the Lanvin picture - mainly because I think of how horrid it could be. Rafa trying to look smoldering in a photoshoot is definitely not his element. I'm glad they didn't try to totally glam him up and I love the B&W (then again, I'm a big fan of B&W photography).

My all-time favorite magazine shoot with him was one where he's jumping around and acting like he's playing tennis, but with no racket. He just looks relaxed and like he's having fun. The playful part of the V shoot is my second favorite. Imagine that pictures from those shoots are the ones I use in my site header. ;)

  31. I love the photo, but there are others that I love more. Such as http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee256/Dharma5/Beautywithflag.jpg This is one of my all time favorites. It just takes my breath away. Or this http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee256/Dharma5/OMG.jpg. As is evidenced by the internal title, when I saw this, it also left me speechless.
Why couldn't they have done something like these?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Those aren't posed. ;)
They should just have someone follow Rafa around and take pictures of him being himself. I have a very nice camera and some pro-level lenses....I could make that sacrifice.

    ReplyDelete
  33. You = new Lanvin art director? Who do I call to make this happen?

    ReplyDelete
  34. ...in white speedos. Or maybe bare bottomed as well...with a few sprinkles of sand stuck to his cheeks...
    Mmmm...

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oh.... mah..... Gawd..... o_O

    ReplyDelete
  36. WHOA those are awesome - and surprisingly, I've never seen them before. Doesn't happen a lot to a cyber-stalker like me, I tell ya...

    ReplyDelete
  37. Ooooh! You've given me an idea for a post. The answer will be up in one.

I never cared much for hair (unless it's gelled up like Nando's - THEN I'd have a problem) but Roger's unflappable hair is awe-inspiring! What does he use for it?

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'll be a tripod. Whatever it takes. Can I come now??

    ReplyDelete
  39. Checked it out. Wrong Nacho? LOL!
